Competitions and Golf Events

The 4th of April hosts the first competition of the season in the shape of the April Medal. It is the precursor to a very busy golfing year, due partly to the 125th anniversary of the clubs founding in July 1884. The Easter Tankard will follow on the 12th of April and the CAPTAIN'S DRIVE IN on the following day. Please attend the event and support John Bell the new 2009 Captain on his prestigious day.

All members who enter a club competition must remember that failure to turn up for an event or fail to enter their score into the computer after a game will prevent them from entry in to the next 3 competitions in the clubs calendar. The demand for places in competitions will regularly exceed the slots available this year and it is totally unacceptable to prevent other members from participating due to your failure to attend.

Newbiggin juniors got their season off to a good start by beating a strong Longhirst team in a friendly match on Sun 29 March. Next up is the junior league Texas scramble at Morpeth on Sunday 5th April. Under the Junior Captain Lee Warren the team is Lee Lansbury, Kris Willis and young debutant Luke Jeffrey.

The County Foursomes

Les Dawson & Merill Lansbury represented Newbiggin in the County foursomes at Gosforth Golf Club (The Bridle Path) on Saturday 4th April. They teed off against players from Tynemouth ably supported by their caddies for the day Captain John Bell on Merrill's bag and Vice Captain Ronnie Taylor on Les's bag.  The playing conditions were tough due to high winds and the greens were only recently hollow tined and sanded.

They played steady par golf and went 3 up after nine and continued to win the 11th and 12th holes with Tynemouth finally conceding on the 14th. Newbiggin won  6 & 4.

In the afternoon round Newbiggin played the winners of the match between Hexham (Hadrian League Winners ) and Prudhoe (N & D League Winners ). James Curry and Neil Graham from Prudhoe edged out Hexham on the 19th hole.

Prudhoe started with confidence and were 2 up after 4 holes. Newbiggin pulled it back to level after 12 and then they won the 13th & 15th to go 2up. They lost the next 2 holes to birdies, so it was all square going up the 18th. A nervous bogey from both teams and it was into extra holes.  They halved the 19th and then went onto the 20th where Prudhoe won out. They now go forward to the next round at Alnmouth.

Well done to Les and Merill for their valiant effort.
